The first thing I must point out about Co-Op Markets is that there is no indication on their website that they are focused on environmentally sound products. It seems likely that they would be, given the general tendencies of cooperative grocery stores – but, having never been there, I can’t make any such statement with confidence!
Regardless, the co-op is dedicated to having a democratic and cooperative management structure. A full membership costs only $30, the purchase price of 3 shares in the store, although the co-op does permit additional shares to be purchased. One assumes that they still only allow one vote per member, however! Member benefits include a 5% discount on all purchases every third Thursday (every Thursday during the month of October), patronage refunds, dividend earnings (relative to the number of shares purchased), and case discounts.
