George Street Co-op

The George Street was begun in 1973 by ten people from Rutgers University. They started as a private buying club, but expanded to open a small retail store only one year later. The co-op moved to it’s current location in 1988.

The co-op sells vegetarian foods, organic produce, bodycare and earthwise products, bulk foods, books, gifts, and more. The co-op maintains an active social program hosting cabarets, potlucks, and running class on natural foods, cooking, and other issues.

Membership requires an annual fee of $24 and a refundable equity deposit of $100, payable in quarterly installments of $25. The Co-op provides for equity waivers, should financial hardship prevent somebody from purchasing their share. Non-working members receive a 1% discount on all purchases. Working members receive a 6% discount at 2 hours/month, or a 15% discount working 2 hours/week.
