Park Slope Food Coop

The Park Slope Food Coop is open only to members, and is the largest food coop of its type in the country. It was founded in 1973, and has expanded from that handful of members to 11,000 plus members today.

Although non-members may not shop at the co-op, they are certainly welcome to join. Membership costs a $25 non-refundable joining fee and a $100 investment in the coop. The investment may be refunded if you terminate your membership. Each adult member of a household is expected to have their own membership. For members receiving certain kinds of income-based assistance, these fees are substantially reduced.

All members are expected to work at the Coop. This requirement is light – only 2 hours and 45 minutes once every four weeks. Since all individuals shopping at the co-op are working members, the main benefit provided is the privilege to shop at the Coop. Prices are kept extremely low, and savings can be as high as 20 to 40%, depending on the items you purchase.
