Rainbow Grocery is a worker-owned cooperative with a long and quite colorful history. (No pun intended!) The grocery was started by a San Francisco Hindu spiritual community as a purchasing collective for vegetarian or "pure" foods. The store opened with exclusively volunteer labor, but quickly became more profitable and began to pay the volunteer employees.
The history of this cooperative grocery is quite interesting – and I highly suggested visiting their website to give it a read!
Regardless, today the store offers extensive grocery purchasing options, nutritional supplements, bath and body care, household products, and books. The store focuses on certified organic, non-genetically modified, locally grown or produced and fair trade products.
